How long do laptop battery last?

Just curious, for those people who have a laptop PC, how long does your battery last on a full charge?

Answering this question is like trying to answer "how long does it take you to eat dinner?"

It depends on the model of the computer, the power-savings mode, the type of battery...

It depends on what you do. A little over 2 hours playing a DVD or playing a graphic intense game to about 4 hours to just surf.

About the same for me, on a D600 Latitude. (As long as the brightness is not turned all the way up.)

Boy ain't that the truth. I turned up the brightness from the default on battery usage, and man it made a difference. Sometime is actually help the picture when watching DVD's to turn it down slightly. Better blacks, etc. Then I can stretch out a little more life.

BTW, any word on a more powerful battery for the 600 series? There have been "rumors" about a slightly heavier 8 cell battery for it.

Toshibe Satellite 2.0 ghz Intel Mobile

Lasts about 2.5 hrs on DVD
over 3 just surfin.

This laptop (my first personal purchase) battery has lasted better than any other in my experience including IBM and dell. In the past the battery was toast in less than a year no matter how it was treated. This one has lasted (knock on wood) 15 months and doesnt miss a beat.

12 minute on a full battery charge is not very good. Can you mention the brand and model that perform that poorly? I will have to avoid those laptops.

Yeah. I just want to get a ballpark figure. Not looking for exact time down to the second.

One person mentioned that battery last only 12 minutes after 1 month of use. That's pretty bad performance for a battery then. I'm looking for info like that to help me determine if a laptop is a good buy for my uses.

On a related question, when your battery run out of power, does your laptop gracefully shutdown all applications and save data before turning off. Or does it just switch off right away so if you are in the middle of working on something, it's lost?

Also, does laptop PC let you do hot swapping of batteries? So you can take out one battery and put in another out without missing a beat? Or do you need to shutdown laptop to swap?

Some of my co-workers were having problems with the battery in their IBM. I refered them to IBM.COM, and I think I just did a search for battery. IBM had some steps where you could re-condition your battery. This was on an older laptop, but if you completely drained the battery, then completely recharged it, it seemed to help (and it did for these guys, a little anyway).

Again, this was an older laptop, so might not work on the newer batteries.

My Sony Vaio is about 4 years old. Battery still lasts over 1 hour, unless I use the wireless PC card, then the battery life cuts down to about 45 minutes.

mine seems to die about 5 minutes from the end of any movie I want to watch. 90 min movie or 3 hour movie. I think it is taunting me

mine tends to last around 2-3 hours depending on use. Dell 5100.
