Help speeding up my computer?

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop with XP, it's about a year old now, and lately I've been having lots of trouble with the computer running much slower than it used to, and it's especially bad when I'm on battery power, even if its fully charged.

I've used Adaware and Spybot to make sure I'm clear of spyware and everything. I do download lots of live concerts via bit torrent and then delete them later after converting them. I also usually defragment every couple of weeks or so after deleting lots of stuff. I also check the processes to make sure nothing is really hogging the memory, usually it looks ok.

Just wondering if there's anything else I can do to speed up or if there's any programs I can download to help with this. It's not that big of a deal, but I was just curious to see what I might be able to do. Thanks in advance.

Have you try to defragment your harddrive? After a while all your data are scattered over the harddrive taking it much longer to load. If your slowdown is due to a lot of harddrive access, then you might want to try defrag your HD and see if it improve your speed.

How many icons in the tray are showing?

I had this problem a year or two ago.

I had something like 17-18 programs running in the background.

I currently keep about 5-6 at most.

START - RUN - type in MSCONFIG - STARTUP tab.

Uncheck everything you don't need running in the background.

Should speed it up.

Just my guess.
