trouble reinstallilng/deleting IE 6

I keep getting an 'error' message for my internet exporer. When i try to open it or when using another browser and IE tries load a second page i get:
IE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. No error number or details.
i went to microsoft support and tried a few things they suggest:
-replacing/fixing registry keys (via run....)
-doing an in-place upgrade, and reinstallin windows.
none of these work. and since you can't actually delete IE from XP, i'm at a lost. they suggest doing a Registry Edit (via run...regedit). but i'm a bit afraid to as it sounds a little over my head.
any suggestions or ideas would be great as its very annoying to battle this and very annoying i can't simply delete and start over.
ps i've d'loaded the 'installation wizard' for reinstalling IE but every time it begins it recognizes that it is already on my system. help, anyone? thanks.

I love IE, but I'd suggest to save yourself some stress and time by using another browser like Mozilla's Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Since you are running XP try doing a system restore to a point before this started happening. Do you have spybot on your system? If so, did you lock down IE via immunize? Maybe some spyware hijacked IE. Running HijackThis may uncover something.

Ranger- I recently d'led netscape and am running through that. but IE continues to pop up in the background. not as an advertisement-popup, but as secondary links ( i dont know how else to explain it---ever run through a browser like msn, and it will at times use IE?)

Garolo- Since i did an in place upgrade yesterday, as per IE instruction, this is now my only system restore point. and this problem has been going on for about a month.
--i don't have spybot, is it something i can d'l. I will look for it.
thanks for all advice, but im afraid im still at a lost.

Okay just ran spybot: and uncovered this
found 38 registry, 15 cookies and a few files it considers harmful.
this seems a ridiculous amount. should i just clear them out? or should spybot do this.
thanks again.

Go ahead and clear it out with Spybot and try Lavasoft's Adaware.

No clue on what you mean about "secondary links." Maybe you need to set Navigator as your default browser. Or try another browser.

There's a way to download the full version of IE (but this can be about 30MB)

have you tried start/run:
sfc /scannow

that'll repair IE through the cd.
