Help, Computer rebooting itself.

After Installing Microsoft office 2003 Student and teachers edition, my computer rebooted as soon as I opened Excel. During rebbot, Scan disk began but I canceled it. I went to open excel again and it rebooted again. This time I let scan disk run. I rebboted and it worked fine for a week. Today I was in excel, using it for about a half hour and then it reboot itself again. After the reboot, been using it and it is OK again.

Any Idea what could be causing this?

I'd uninstall and re-install.

Scandisk on re-boot?

What OS are you running?

I've never gotten that with XP...used to get it with 98SE.

XP Home.
I'll try that if it happens again.

So far I have been using it since this post, and no problem yet.

Possibly it is just coincidence that it was with Excel.
I have never had any other problems with my computer.

I also installed Java sdk and AVG virus around the same time.
I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

JUst what I was thinking. First thing is to turn off that damn restart function. I don't get it...an error happens and you don't know what because it's restarting. Ahh Well.

Right Click My Computer>Properties>Advanced Tab>"Startup & Recovery" Settings Button>Uncheck Automatically restart.

This will force the pc to stay up with the error displayed. You may be getting something else happening. Excel could be an instigator but it's odd that it works fine for periods of time even with excel. It's not consistant to excel which leads me to believe you have a different problem.

If it does error out it shouldn't restart...write down all the 0x codes and the exact message then bring it back to us. Microsoft's knowledgebase is pretty good about providing information about the error codes this time around vs. those damn fatal OE errors in 98...they gave you a code but couldn't look them up anywhere.
