UPS Suggestion

I just bought this UPS at Frys today because it was $10 off, but I'm not sure if it will handle my system. I guess it will, but just wondering what others might suggest for a UPS.

I have a standard tower with an Athlon 1800 XP, 5 HDs, Radeon 9500, etc. and a 17" Flat monitor.

The UPS is 350 VA and it says that it should last 4-5 minutes if the power goes out - which I guess would be good enough, but for $10 - $20 more, I could get a much better UPS that lasts longer, though I really don't know if it's necessary - any ideas?

P.S. - It's an APC.

Yeah, you won't get much with that. You might be better off not plugging your monitor into that, and just using the UPS as a buffer when the electricity blinks for a second.

Well I haven't opened it and still have the receipt - so I'll probably take it back and spend the extra cash for a higher capacity UPS.

What VA would anyone suggest to run 2 computers - one an AMD 1800+ the other at 1200 and one monitor? Or do you really have to get 2 different UPSs to do something like that?

You might be able to pull that off with a 1000-1500. Depends really if you are looking to stay up during a blackout, or just something to give you a couple minutes to shutdown. I have a APC 1500 at home, mainly cause I got a really good deal on it though...

I'm just looking to have 5 or so minutes to shutdown - keeping power throughout isn't really a necessity. Though it would be nice to have 10 minutes or so so I can get all my programs closed safely.

I have an 800VA and a 1200VA for machines that draw around the same power as yours.

The 800 is adequate but I wouldn't trust it for more than 5 minutes. It's generally loaded at 55-65% for a machine with an overclocked 2400+ (probably close to your current draw with its Palomino core), 5 hard drives, GeForce4 Ti 4200, 19" LCD.

The 1200 is for a server that has more drives and needs to stay up as long as possible. I'd prefer having two 1200VA UPSs though. You might be able to get by with one 1200.
