Help with Windows ME

I booted the computer earlier and when it got to the desktop, it froze. So I turned it off and turned it back on. Problem is, the monitor is just blank (black), like it's not transmitting from the pc to the monitor (it seems like it's in sleep mode because the light for the pc is orange instead of green). I rehooked the cables and still no go. Any advice? Thanks.

For starters, I'd try and boot from another operating system, to determine whether it is a hardware or a software problem.

If you still have your Me CD, you can boot off of it.

Try this:

1. Unplug the computer.

2. Hold down the power button for about 10 seconds.

3. Plug it back in and reboot.

What does that do Groucho?

I tried both advice. Groucho's advice didn't work. The monitor works fine with a different computer. Now only if I can find the boot up disc....

Did it really turn off? On my computer, the power button isn't a real switch, it just sends signal to computer that it should turn off. Mine frequently freezes to the point where that is inop (and sometimes the monitor is already asleep, sometimes it isn't).

The only thing that staightens it out is taking its power away, either unplugging from wall, or, in my case turning off the UPS it is plugged into.

When it is turned back on, it reboots, but it whines and cries and wants to run ScanDisk. You certainly shouldn't do it unnecessarily, but sometimes, it's the only way to get its attention.

I don't think this has anything to do with ME at all. You aren't even getting to the BIOS it seems. Since my suggestion didn't work, I'm thinking this might be a hardware problem.

Out of curiousity, what kind of PC do you have? Brand name, model number, specs, anything you know.

Also, what were you doing right before you had this problem?
