Help me find a laptop that fits my needs!

I'm not much of a computer guru.
I've been on the same desktop since 1999. I'm looking to buy a second computer (laptop).

One of the main reasons is portability and I want a dvd player for an upcoming road trip.

I also have road runner cable modem, and I want to be able to use this laptop without wires throughout the house.
Also want to be able to connect to the internet in hotels (where available).

For the most part I would be using the computer for basic applications, movie watching, some music, online poker, etc.
Nothing too heavy.

I'm looking to get the most bang for the buck.
What options do I need to get the above?
What options are nice to look out for?
What price range?

I highly recommend looking for one equipped with Intel Centrino technology. That will give you wireless LAN for using the laptop without wires and it will give you excellent battery life (mine averages about 4-5 hrs. per charge!) and a great processor. I would look for a display ofaround 15" UXGA. Looking in the neighboorhood of $1,600-$2,200 depending on features.

What screen resolution do you run? UXGA is good for DVD viewing and multi-tasking, but the basic one at XGA 1024x768 is fine for most people. I'd second the Centrino as well, I think Dell has the 300M for around $1200.

Go with the WSXGA screen. A nice compromise and DVD viewing and general work is great.

I just got a nicely equipped HP zt3000. 15.4" widescreen...also good for viewing movies

www.x1000forums.com They're down again...but they have some great ideas for cheap upgrades.

Compaq x1000 = HP zt3000....same basic computer.

Integrated wireless G on the zt3000. Love it.

Good luck.

thanks for all the information guys!

I can buy the computer anytime between tomorrow and June.
I'm in no real rush, so if anyone finds a great deal on a good system in the coming weeks please post it.
thanks for the suggestions so far.
