Do I really need a DVD RW drive?

15% coupon Dell just sent me got me thinking about getting a new computer. I can get a 16x DVD writer instead of a 48x CD/RW for $80 more. I don't have a digital camcorder. Other than the 6x added space per disc (over CD), are there any other reasons that I should need a DVD writer? Do burned DVDs last longer than CDs? Are DVD writers anymore reliable than a 48x CD writer? How compatible are the burned discs with other DVD players.

Thanks.

16x DVD writer? Dell is certainly well ahead of the game.

How compatible? check: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers

Whoops. I meant 8x writer, which I believe is a 16x reader.

CD-RW are still more reliable than DVD writers. They have been around for years and there are established formats. DVD media is still expensive and more error prone compared to CD-R data.

Unless you really have a need to burn DVDs (like backups of movies or other things), I would just go with the CD-RW.

If you're don't see a use for it right now then save the $80. If you eventually decide you do want one, it will probably cost you less then $80 and then you would have two optical drives instead of one.

Even right now @Newegg:
NEC 8x DVD +/- R/RW : $104

Or the 4x version for : $93

Thanks Chanster and breaux124. I think I'll go with a dual CDR/W and DVD ROM and save $50.
