Which [free] id3 tag editor to get?

I've never used an id3 tag editor before, and was looking for opinions on a good, free program. I have many files to edit, and would like to make this process as trouble free as possible.

I couldn't do a search as "id3" "tag" and "mp3" are all three letter words. I did go through 10 pages looking for a thread with this topic, with nothing found.

Thanks!

I just downloaded mp3tag for use with my iPod and I'm happy with it so far.

The interface is pretty simple and I like the fact that you can batch rename a bunch of things at once. I'm sure other applications do this as well.

I just searched tucows for the highest rated tag editor.

ID3-TagIt

I've used that one for quite some time, and I think it's the best free one out there. There's a slight learning curve to be able to work fast with it, but it's very powerful.

I like mp3ext (freeware)
http://www.mutschler.de/mp3ext/

you can edit id3 tags, automatically generate tags from filenames, even configure mp3's icons:

Well, when "acquiring" certain tracks, quite often the person you're receiving from might not have tagged the file correctly, if at all.

I use Tag&Rename for such occurrences, but it's not free.

Is $29.99 the going price for the latest version of Tag&Rename?

And which is the latest version???

Or is there a new favorite?

For quick-n-dirty tags, I use TagScan.

I make sure the tags and file names are right when I encode, it's the downloaded stuff that sometimes need editing

The latest version is 3.17 ($29.95), and there is also a 3.2 Beta available if you're daring. I think this is by far the best tagger out there.

Oh... Yeah. My 30 day is up on that one, and I have some maintenance to do. I loved it, though. I'm figuring an uninstall/install wouldn't be the right idea.

I wrote one a while back - free, and even open-source. You're welcome to it.

I just used musicbrainz.org. It worked pretty well, but I would guess that the ones listed above will work better. I think it only pulled 3/4 of the songs, and it would have been nice if it would have pulled the year and track info.

But, it got me enough of what I needed to quickly get the rest through searches.

Yeah, I seriously doubt the reinstall would work, but at this point you might as well give it a shot.

I've found MediaMonkey to be pretty effective.
