Power Supply Question

I purchased a new power supply for a friend of mine and I installed it, however the back fan is not spinning. I let the computer run for a couple hours and the fan never started, but the power supply never got hot either.

I guess my question is do all power supplies run all the time or do some run only when needed? I tried checking the manufacturers’ website but I found nothing.

This is the power supply I got here: Linky

Some power supplies vary the speed of their fans with their temperature.

Does it have a connector so that the motherboard can monitor the fan's RPMs? That would imply that it is variable.

It does have a connector to the motherboard, it's on of those 4 pronged jobbies which I thought powered the P4 chip.

It should be a connector on pretty thin wires. Wires too thin to supply power.

Given that it's a real cheapie it might just be that the fan doesn't work or is disconnected internally.

I'd open it up and take a look myself. But you need to know what you're doing as it can shock you quite badly if you're not careful.

Yes, if you don't konw what you are doing, do not open the power supply up. You could kill yourself!
