USB Drive/Key Question

I bought a Lexar Media JumpDrive (256MB) USB Drive/Key late last year. I bought it for the sole purpose of quick and easy backups of my school work (programs etc.) Well the problem is, its very touchy or something. Occassionally, I will plug it into my laptop and it will be listed in the Safely Remove Hardware list, but it is not listed as a drive in My Computer. Does anyone know what could be causing this and if so, are there any fixes? I have some pretty critical data on it right now and it won't detect in my laptop or any of my classmate's. My laptop is a Compaq EvoN800C if it matters.

Thanks

What OS are you running.

I don't think that those USB drives should be used as a permanent save but rather a transportation drive. Removing a flash drive in and out like that has a certain chance of failing.

Try one of the school computers to see if it will work on that. Contact Lexar and see if this is a known compatability issue.

I'm using XP, and it not meant as a permanent storage location. Its just that I'm writting some huge programming assignments and I dump them to the drive every 1/2 or so in case the editor crashes (which it does far too frequently). I've tried it on my boyfriend's laptop and home PC and it seems to work fine on that, but it only seems to fail on my laptop occassionaly. I've spoken with a customer rep from Lexar and they don't know of any compatibility issuses.
