random thought of the night. USB driver related

I realize that now that XP is out it can auto install a lot of usb devices and not need additional drivers, but I've had this idea for quite a while.
Why couldn't they have made it so that the drivers were on a rom on the usb device and could automatically be installed when the device was plugged in? Usually the found new hardware window woudl be able to say the name and manufacturer of the device, so that info was obviously on a rom and sent to the pc so why couldn't they put full drivers?

that's kinda like a vhs tape on how to install a vcr.

but even if you want some standard low level partition to store drivers, then you could also argue why not have all devices like that, such as graphics cards, sound cards, etc. but that becomes problematic because you would need drivers for win 9x, win nt/xp, mac, depending on the device itself, and additional money spent on adding this partition/rom to every device made.

but since win 2k/xp have standard driver support for usb drives, this becomes less of a problem as each day passes and less people use win9x.

i'm more bothered about a standard format not being set for usb drives, and thus not all usb drives being bootable.
