Messenger Service HELP!

Hello I am running Windows 200 and am getting gray pop up boxes from Mesenger Service in the title bar. I have run adaware and Spybot and neither have found it, or Norton. They are fairly constant, and come anytime, weather I have email, internet or nothing open. Help! Thanks!

It's a "bug" in Windows. Here's how to fix it:

Go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel. Then Services and look for Messenger.

Disable the startup and stop the service.

It's definitely not a bug...but next time - try search.

messenger will bring up A LOT of threads...why we haven't pinned one yet, I don't know.

I don't know why I'm responding back to this thread, but I know it's not a bug. Hence, the quotes.

Ok, I've said my peace.

I wasn't directing anything at you about the search, but just the bug part - I've never seen it called that before so I thought it was curious.

Oh, it's fine. I didn't think much of it. I just felt I needed to defend the nerdiness that is so much a part of me.

I called it a "bug" because it saves me the trouble of making up a reason why it was included in 2000 and XP. Contrary to my nerdiness, I don't know why the service was included in either OS.

As far as I know, this service was originally available with Windows NT. Its (primary) purpose was to allow users to send short messages to other users (or all users) on the network similar to the way text messages are sent to cell phones today.

Anyway, since Windows 2000 and Windows XP "evolved" from Windows NT, that component was maintained. The messenger service was never included in the Windows 9x line. Technically speaking, Windows XP Home is the first consumer-oriented version of Windows to include this capability.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.
