What use is Java?

I dumped Microsoft VM because of a trojan exploit. Should I install the Sun java or just forget it? Is Java really necessary?

A lot of websites use Java applets. Eventually you'll probably run into something that uses it.

Yeah, but if it is purely eye candy I can't say I care. Is it used for anything useful?

Applets can be anything, not just eye candy. Interactive, whatever.

There's no hurry, of course. You could just wait until you needed it and download then.

ESPN live uses Java script, so any Java client will work, not just MS VM.

Sun Java doesn't take up much space and doesn't interfere w/ your system performance, so what's w/ the hold up?

I still have the MS Java installed so if I REALLY need Java, I switch over to IE, but here in Firebird, I very rarely ever have to use it. So I would guesstimate I use Firebird 99.5% of the time, switching over only for Yahoo's Stattracker during the football season.

If you use Bittorrent and use some of the various clients like Azureus you will need Java Runtime Environment to get it up and running. That's one particular example why many people need and run/install Java.

Well I missed a few popups and banners and that's really breaking my heart. I think I'll skip java. Thanks for the input.
