4 GB microdrive for under $300, includes free MP3 player

Found here: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=7295681

Apparantly, the Creative Labs MuVo harddrive-based mp3 players use an unaltered Hitachi microdrive. The newest one, the MuVo2, has a 4 gig microdrive inside. The player sells for around $300. The drive is IDENTICAL to the stand-alone drive that sells for $500.

Apparantly, the new Mini iPod, which goes for $250, uses a similar drive, not sure if it's compliant with the Compact Flash spec or not...

I read that some of the drives were soldered in and had incompatible connectors or something?

I think that may be a rumor... I'm not sure, but in my link, several people bought MuVo2s (4 gig versions) and it had a normal microdrive inside.

I can't find it in stock anywhere. Even if I can it, I'm not sure I'd want to buy it because it is the slowest drive for the 10D

I need to get another 1GB CF or something larger for my 10D. The 1GB I have is not enough if I want to shoot RAW.

Slowest? I've heard about in the middle when it comes to speed.

The drive itself is not slow per say, but it is the slowest for the Canon 10D. Funny how the same MD is the fastest in the Kodak 14n.

Checkout Rob Galbraith's site. A few users from DP & Fred Miranda's sites have confirmed that the 4GB MD is slow.

Alright, I went ahead and ordered the drive from buy.com for $199. They are not in stock now so let see how long I will have to wait.

I've got my Muvo last week. Took the sucker apart and the MD is not soldered. Formatted the MD in my 10D and the MD is ready for use.

I was disappointed by the speed of the MD in the 10D compared to my slow Sandisk 1GB CF. I tried one of the suggestion from Fred Miranda's site where you format the MD with a 32K cluster instead of the default 16K. I've noticed that the performance is on par with my Sandisk CF now.

Cool.

The non-standard formatting bit is interesting. If you use the camera to format, does it use the 32k c,usters?

The 10D will format the MD with default 16K.
