Does a gigabit network require special cables?

I'm thinking of upgrading to gigabit nics and a gigabit switch for my two computers. Do I have to get new cables as well, or will I get the full speed with my current old Cat5 cables?

your Cat5 cables will be fine. I'm running Cat5e cables on my gigabit network with much success. Definitly the way to go if your doing large file transferring locally.

Make sure the your cable is using all 8 wires, otherwise you're not utilizing gigabit.

If you look at the end of the cable, all 8 wires should connect to the gold contacts. Some CAT5 cable only has 2 pairs.
