how do you know what processes you can eliminate in your task manager? it says 33 processes. is that normal?

Excellent link, I keep forgetting to bookmark it in the past. After checking out the processes running on mine, I have been running as lean as can be.

thanks for all the help guys. i have that svchost.exe virus. anybody know how to get rid of it?

I believe that is an integral part of Windows. You shut that down and everything shuts down. I imagine that if you removed it, you would be hosed.
