What are "$NtUninstall" folders?

This may be a dumbass question, but I'm only computer-semiliterate.

When I enter Windows contents folder, all the expected files are there, but there is also a whole slew of transluscent folders titled $NtUninstall... They seem to become more numerous over time, which would contradict the presumption that they were on the hard drive at delivery.

What is their purpose? Thanks.

I think they're the files that got replaced when you downloaded a Windows Update. So, if you uninstalled an update it would go on of those folders to restore your old files.

At least that's my guess off the top of my head.

I deleted all my very old ones to free up some space about a month ago. If your computer is running fine and you know for sure you won't uninstall a windows update then it should be safe to delete.
