Need help with choppy video

I'm having a problem with some of the games I play on the computer (most recently Battlefield 1942). The game gets really choppy during gameplay, but it's terrible during the intro movie. It plays for a second then pauses, plays, pauses and so on so forth. I tried changing the settings for my video card (ATI Radeon 8500DV), the setting for the game itself, I can't figure it out. The rest of my set-up is as follows:

2.56 P4
160 gb hd
1 gig ram
sound blaster audigy
Sony DVD-Rom
Pioneer DVD-RW

I am running DirectX 8.1. Any help would be great. Thanks.

how much on board memory does the video card have? try beefing up the card to something with more than the minimal specs the game requires.

seeing that your system has 1 GB of ram for the OS, i doubt thats the problem, but close all other unecessary applications prior to playing.

obviously read the book for the game and see if they reccomend anything specific for best results, ie changing screen resolution, etc...

try to lower the resolution to 800x600 or 1024x768.

1942 is probably a dx9 game, so that probably has some effect too.
