Good photo program

I'm want to "graduate" to a real "photoshop" type program. Any recommendations?

I've used the Kodak and Olympus stuff, but wanted something more. I realize there are some $300.00+ pro programs out there. I don't want to make that jump yet.

What are some recommendations for the advanced amature? I'm family with film cameras. I use to develope and print B&W film and print Color film. In particular I would like program that allows burning and shading of particular parts of the photos. I would also like something that lets me easily file, sort the photos.

Photoshop Elements 2 has almost all of the features that Photoshop 7 has except the price ($100 vs. $700). Unless you are doing real desktop publishing, Elements is the way to go. There are several good books and free online tutorials available to learn Elements. I highly recommend it.

I would recommend Elements too. If you don't want to lay down the dough for Photoshop, Elements is probably your best bang-for-buck program IMO.

If you are a student, you can get a full copy of Photoshop for around $250.

Another vote for Elements. IMO, Elements is really "Photoshop for photographers" (if you compare to PS7; CS added lots of tools just for photogs). For the average photographer, the differences between Elements and Photoshop are slim. Adobe has a demo of it if you want to play with it.

Downloaded the trial version. Pretty darn cool. Still learning and playing of course. But very cool.

FYI, I found Elements at Sams Club for $52.95. Was $99.95 at Curcuit City. I haven't picked it up yet as I was still playing with the trial version....
