Way to keep websites from scanning your hardrive?

There is a music program that I often use online. They recently came out with a newer version, and now everytime I go online they send me a zillion popups telling me to upgrade because I have the old version. (it makes it a MAJOR pain in the butt) I would upgrade but it costs alotta money. The program works fine when I'm offline (it still works online too), so the website must scan my hardrive to see what version I have.

Without setting up complicated firewalls, etc...is there a way to keep the site from seeing what version I have.

Maybe check msconfig for a key in the startup registry that performs the check?

Some programs have a setting under options to check for new versions. You might want to look for a setting like this and turn it off.

I've checked all the settings under the OPTIONS menu, but it doesnt work. The pop-ups say like "newer version is available, please upgrade" and gives me a link to an order form. I must get like a popup every few minutes!

Doesnt XP Pro have a built in firewall for these kinds of things?

I don't think the XP Pro firewall is enabled by default, and I don't think it's advanced enough to allow for easy selective filtering. Zone Alarm Pro will give you the option to block these outgoing requests program by program.

Musicmatch started doing online serial checks with their newest version 8.2 (not a free upgrade for previous purchasers ). I would get a nag screen everytime I shut it down or tried to use a "Plus" function.
