? uhh, what did you say?

I'm assuming you are asking, something like "since when does MS products, such as Office XP require product activation?"

Well, since it was originally released almost two(?) years ago. Yes newer products also require activation.

All versions except the corporate version of Office XP requires MPA.

For more information please look at this websiteMicrosoft Product Activation.

now if you are asking something else, I haven't a clue.

Yep that was what I was asking. It seems that this became effective in the last 6 months.

It was effective when I bought Office XP, and that was at least a year and a half ago.

Well, to answer your question, Office XP in the US when it was released in 2001 was the first major product to use product activation (Office 2000 in foreign countries, Europe, I think, was the first test of the technology). After that came Windows XP, Office 2003, Windows Server 2003, etc.

Ok does anyone know how to change the Office Xp product key? My work got a couple copies of standard for free due to a large purchase they made, but they can't use them. I was given a copy that was apparently activated already so they gave me another copy to try since the former IT guy didn't track which ones were given to which employees, but I can't find anywhere to change the product key to activate it.

If it is a REAL copy of office XP just call Microsoft and they will provide a new one for you.

Yeah it is a real copy. I ended up calling them and activating the new copy over the phone since I couldn't find a way to rekey in the product key.

If you purchased you computer from someplace like COMPUSA or MICROCENTER your XP was (preloaded) activated through them. It would even make allowences for upgrades as long as your computer does't make any drastic changes. The problem comes from a copy of someones XP that is sold (boot) to a different user. In this case it will allow about 30 days of use then shut down on them.
