Whats the point of DVD-R drives?

I just got a computer with a dvd-r drive and have tried about 50 discs...every single one says "Copy right protected"

So again, I ask, whats the point of a DVD-R drive if you cant copy anything?

1.) IBTL
2.) To make your OWN DVDs
3.) To store files using 1/6th the number of discs as CD-Rs.
4.) There are at least half a dozen quick and simple ways around copy protection.
