I got the new XP SP2 beta...who wants to touch me?

After what seemed like forever, Microsoft emailed me last night and I was given access to the SP2 beta program .

It's pretty sweet. Microsoft is up to usual tricks having beefed up the Internet Connection Firewall (to be called Windows Firewall after the beta) and including a pop-up blocker in the new version of IE.

Automatic update now allows all WindowsUpdates to be installed, and a new version of WU is accessed, version 5.

All and all, a cool beta so far .

I want to touch you about as much as I want to touch a Microsoft SP beta.

, that's cold.

The beta's good. Microsoft's gotten a lot better about this sort of thing. Although I did have to download 9 new patches off of WU after I installed SP2 .

Yeah, it stands for Service Pack 2.

Which means it has all the patches from service pack 1 + the patches up to yesterday + some new features.

Most people are speculating Late Q1 2004/early Q2 2004

Since it's a service pack, testing doesn't take long.

You're allowed to talk about this? You didn't have to sign a dna or nda or whatever they're called?

Usually you do when you are doing a high profile beta like Longhorn I imagine, but they didn't make me do anything. Besides every site like NeoWin is reported about this too.

So am I reading this right: if hypothetically you were to do a new, clean install of XP, all you would have to do after that is install SP2 and the latest WU, you wouldn't have to install SP1 first?

Uh-huh. SP2 contains all the fixes from SP1. And I think late last night Microsoft posted a CD image of SP2 integrated into the XP installer, so that you would only have to do a clean install of XP to be up-to-date.
