Memory upgrade help

I have a Dell Demension 8300 3.0 ghz that I purchased in June & I want to go for 512MB to 1024MB Ram but I'm not sure how to tell what ram to purchase. The specs on the recipt that it has 512MB Dual Channel 400MHz. Anyone have any ideas on what I need & where to get a good price. Thanks

Owner's manual for the 8300...
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems...m/M2972bk0.pdf

Apparently you can get either DDR 333 or 400 non-ECC (see page 102) memory.

You can try http://www.Crucial.com and select your memory by the machine make and model. Also, keep you eye out on Office Max, Office Depot, Circuit City, Best Buy, Staples...they all tend to have memory on sale on a regular basis, usually cheap with mail-in rebates.

i'd see what you have now, and buy (2) 256 sticks similar to the ones you have.

what do you guys need 1gb of ram for? 512mb should be enough for most people.

The same reason why people have a 1K DVDs collection: bragging rights.

I work with satellite images. 6 GB of RAM and still not happy. But yes, when most people just work with Word and excel, 512 should be ok for now.
