Can a Newsgroup Post ever be deleted ?

Can a Newsgroup Post ever be deleted ?

Once a newsgroups post makes it through to say the stage where it is on groups.google.com, can it be deleted ?

or is it in newsgroup world forever ?

well, think of it this way: you can delete a post, but if someone saved it onto their hd or something, then it could always resurface later.

Maybe not forever, but it will probably exist somewhere for a long time.

I was looking for something a month or so ago by searching usenet through google and found a newsgroup post from the late 1980s

The Google archives date all the way back to 1981.

I've often wished newsgroup posts had the "Edit" feature such as we have here.

You can cancel it like joeblow pointed out, but many (most) news servers ignore the cancel message as it is too easy to abuse and cancel others messages and what not.

If you don't want it to show up on googles newsgroup archives, you can add X-No-Archive: Yes to the header of your post, or as the first line in your post. Beware, though, that someone can reply to your post and quote it, and it will be archived if they don't put the x-no-archive in their post.
