How does wireless internet at airports work?

Wireless internet virgin here. I just bought a wireless card for my laptop so I can use it at those airport internet areas and some of the hotels I travel to. How do I configure it to work at those places? I'm looking at the manual and it's mentioning SID and WEP settings. Will the default settings of the card allow me to hook up the the airports wireless signal, or does it have to be configured when I get there? I'm using Windows XP Pro and Belkin B-wireless card. Thanks.

In order for it to work at these places, you will most likely need to buy service from T-Mobile, Wayport, or some other wireless hotspot provider. Some places have truly open access points, which are free to use, but most (especially hotel chains and Starbucks), lease their wireless airspace to a hotspot provider. You can find a list at www.hotspotlist.com - it will list who the provider is, and you can then go to their site and figure out how much it would cost.
Anyway, I've never used a hotspot that needs to be paid for, so I am not sure how to set it up, but I am sure it is covered on the T-Mobile, wayport, etc sites.

The hotspots aren't on the airplanes, they're in the airport terminals. You can use your cell phones in airport terminals, as well. And in the airplane while it's at the gate. But once it starts moving, you have to turn it off.

Northwest has recently changed it's policy to allow passengers to use their cell phones when the aircraft is not on the active runway (IE: You could use your phone while taxing to the gate after landing).

Also - If you are in the Milwaukee, WI area free high speed internet is avaiable in a number of city parks (two, I belive).
