Ad-Aware found the following items...safe to remove?

I just installed and ran this and it found the following items in my registry key/values:

1. lycos sidesearch- regkey
2. alexa- regkey
3. exactsearchbar- regvalue
4. Windows- regdata-something to do with mediaplayer ID

all of these are in the Data Miner catagory

are these safe to remove or should I just quaratine these? I am using XP. I don't want to mess up anything by removing something I shouldn't. thanks.

I generally leave the windows Mediaplayer stuff since I know what it is, and the alexa doesn't matter much either...it comes built into IE. you can remove it safely though, doesn't hurt anything. #1 and #3 I'd remove in a heartbeat though.

Here's a few suggestions I can offer.

- If you don't use the aforementioned software (at least, anymore), it's safe to remove them.

- Most likely, if you remove them, they'll probably be recreated by their corresponding software unless you configure it not to create (or use) these items. For example, if I recall correctly, the Windows registry value that you mentioned is a unique ID that Windows Media Player uses to "track" your usage. If it's removed, I believe it will be recreated when you use WMP again unless you specify otherwise.

- If you fee at all uneasy about it, quarantining them, as you mentioned, should keep you safe. At some later date, you could remove them from quarantine if you find that you don't need them anymore.

Plus Ad-Aware can just quarantine them. If you find that something does not work just go back into Ad-Aware and restore the value from the Quarantine.

I just let it Quarantine everything and can not really think of anything it breaks.

It is possible that it could break KaZaa but I have been using KaZaa-Lite for a long time to avoid the spyware and never had any problems.
