In search of: TCP/IP active network connection monitor (e.g., Netwatcher)

Now that I'm setting up my own publicly-accessible network, I need a good network monitor tool. Ideally, I'd like to see who is connected, and to which ports, at all times. I could just run a script that keeps calling netstat, but that seems inelegant. Moreover, if someone is accessing files (e.g., via my webserver), I'd like an easily-readable log of such activity.

Anyone know of software (freeware, preferably) that can accomplish this elegantly? Thanks in advance.

net port monitor does some of what you are looking for, i believe:

you don't have to register it, but some things are disabled until you do, such as kill connection.

this comes recommended....i haven't used it however:

Why not just check the logs produced by your webserver?

Here is a pretty cool (and free) web stat program. It uses the logging of your webserver, and make a nice web page out of it. There are some screenshots, and live demo of it here:
