Lie in a job interview and say you know it. Get the job. Actually DO the job and don't quit.

Having a few reference books for those "I know what I need to do but don't know how" moments - get your company to pay for them if possible. Call them techncal manuals.

Installing Linux at home actually helps you get used to the shell environment if you're not used to it.

They're not three separate things. Solaris is the OS, which is a type of UNIX, developed by Sun. So it's like you just said you need to know "Microsoft, Win2k & Windows"

well.. its not official... so better not to jinx it..

but doesnt look like ill have to lie.. *promotion pending*

yea.. i talked to the director that will be in charge and he was very cool about my total lack of nix experience because of the great reviews i was given by my bosses, and because of my current experience (mis degree and 5 years user support experience, currently level 3 which allows for low level service administration).. I really expected to go the nt route.. but i guess right now, gotta do what i gotta do to get my foot in the door.. there will be alot of resources available to me.. classes (including online class), cbts, books, team members that are already nix experts, etc...
but I guess what Im looking for now is a place to start.. so when *if* i move into the role, I wont look like a tard from day one

There can be... if you're talking about other flavors of *nix as well as Solaris. Doing it probably is the best way to learn it, though classes and books certainly don't hurt. I've got a number of books to help out in a pinch... Teach Yourself Unix in 24 Hours (Sams), Unix Unleashed (Sams), Essential System Administration (O'Reilly), Unix Backup and Recovery (O'Reilly), and a few others laying around as reference.

Maybe get the X86 version of solaris and start playing with it on a pc?
(of course, I don't know if they even sell it still. I had a version a few years back...)
