What video card for my system?

I have a 1.5ghz P4 with 512mb rdram and one of the earliest GeForce 3's (not sure which one. how do you check that by the way?).
I was wondering what the best video cards are that I could get for it that are around 170$ or under.

One way to check is go to start, run, then type in devmgmt.msc and hit enter. This will bring up device manager and look up display adapters and it will list your video card. An ATI 9600 pro can be found for around $170 and is the best performer for that much money. Another choice would be a Geforce 4 Ti4200 64 or 128MB which is significantly less money and still a decent performer.

Sapphire Radeon 9500, $129, can possibly be soft-modded/overclocked to 9700 Pro:

Radeon 9600 Pro, $179:

I would go for a Radeon 9600 Pro. I don't trust the modding capabilities of the 9500, as its a bust if the mod doesn't work.

I might jump on that 9500 at Allstarshops. Question though: its signifcantly cheaper than at any other retailer...I would attribute this to being OEM as compared to retail, but it also looks different (retail has a black fan, this one has a gold fan), and the retail one doesnt have Atlantis mentioned....his there any difference in the two?

I heard that the gold one is the newer batch, the black one the older version of the same card, apparently have the exact same specs, although some claim the black one is a heavier fan and does a better job cooling.
