Printer help needed badly!

Okay, I'm running Winme and I have a HP 5550 deskjet printer. Less than a year old (printer). I have not had any problems until now, and I'm very frustrated by it and could use some help.

When I try and print it says something to the effect that it cannot establish a connection, make sure it's plugged in blah blah.

I've checked the cords, uninstalled then reinstalled the software. Removed the port, then added it.

I'm at a loss.

Could someone offer some help?

My black ink is pretty low, but I can't see that effecting anything but the quality.

Thanks in advance.

If you've got the CD, try this:

Disconnect the printer.

Insert the CD and choose to uninstall (instead of going through the software on the PC).

Restart when prompted.

Leave the printer disconnected and re-install the software.

Re-connect the printer when prompted.

If nothing works, it could be cable that worn out.

Are you using the parallel cable or did you go with USB? The problems sounds like Parallel to me. Cheapest solution is to replace the cable. Perhaps try switching to USB if you have an open port.

no dice.

although the error is now a box that says the status, and mentions the ink levels.

however, during the set-up it did show "printer not detected"

I'm using a parallel cable, I only have two USB ports both are taken.

grab the usb cable from one of your other devices and plug it into your printer, just to test to see if it'll work. you'll probably have to install usb printer drivers. if it does, then you can get a usb hub.
