Laptop RAM limits?

I have an old Fujitsu Montego laptop. It came with 8MB RAM soldered in and an expansion slot for more RAM.

According to Fujitsu, the max RAM is 40MB (adding a 32MB stick), but I've seen online stores selling 64MB sticks for this particular model.

So is it generally possible to put in a 64MB stick? (It's possible 64MB sticks didn't exist back when the laptop was built)
