best way to clean up a laptop

for 2 years i used my laptop as my primary comp. in feb. i bought a dell and so i haven't been using the laptop except for writing or getting old files off. last time i used it i noticed it was experiencing minor problems with things not working together properly. what's the best way to clean it up, get rid of unneeded programs, etc. and basically get it back to the "bare bones" state it was in when i bought it. i would like to ONLY use it for writing.

it uses windows ME

I agree with both of the above posts....at the least, get rid of Windows ME...worst case scenario "downgrade" to Windows 98.

ME is widely acknowledged as the worst of all the MS operating systems. Even Microsoft recommends that you choose another of their operating systems.

But if you want to clean, the best way is to simply format and start over. I typically do that to all my machines about once a year -- makes a huge difference.
