No way. FCP 4 comes out next week. Hold out for that one.

Seriously, FCP is one hell of a system, but probably overkill for most people.

Depends on your needs. If you're looking into getting into filmmaking, editing together sound, video, and fx, then look at the upper eschelon of software like Final Cut Pro, or go for the industry standard of Avid Xpress. Aist Xtreme also puts out a really good product that rivals the both of them.

If you're looking at home movies, to edit together, stuff that you don't want to have to invest in a high end computer and high end software for, then Vegas 4 is getting really good attention. There's also Adobe Premiere which is set for a new release supposedly coming up. In both of these cases, you can download the demo and try it out, see which one you like better.
