easy way to tell if my usb ports are working?

i'm running xp pro. never used the usb ports before. i tried connecting my nikon 995 after installing the nikon view 6 software...but when i try and launch the nikon transfer i keep getting an error message telling me that there is no CF card in the camera or reader. this is not the case. also, when i used to turn on the camera while connected to the usb cable (on my other pc) the nikon view software would launch automatically...now nothing happens. i can't figure out what the problem is.

Did you look in the device manager to see if the USB ports were working properly?

yeah, that's the confusing part...under usb controllers in device manager i see this:

Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

and the properties for each of them show the device as working properly.

actually the USB2 one says "No drivers are installed for this device."

How about finding the USB2 drivers for your motherboard and install them?

If the port you're trying to use is a USB2 (even though it supports USB1) I'd say you need the USB2 driver.
