Win 2k problem "drive c: is corrupt..." ?

I'm trying to re-install win2k and I get the error message "setup has determined that drive c: is corrupt and cannot be repaired" What can I do? I can't reformat the hard drive, since I have 20 gigs of data that I need to save. Any workarounds?

ps. the system (at P3 1.2ghz, 128ram) is running insanely slow. Not nearly as fast as an old P2300 i have in the house.

Is it possible your drive really is rotten? How old is it? Have you heard it making any noises lately.
