question about newsreaders

am I missing anything by reading usenet groups at groups.google.com?

what difference would I notice by using a paid service?

If you read usenet for text articles and discussion, you're not missing anything. Paid providers are mainly used for binary groups, where you can find anything if you look hard enough. A full usenet feed today runs hundreds of gigs, much too large for Google to archive anything but the text articles.

Paid service is good for binary groups if you need the longer retention period. Your ISP news server might only hold 1-2 days of articles.
