Using a new USB controller on MAME/Emulator/Old Games?

I have a couple of new game controllers that connect to my computer via USB ports. They work great, only I cannot play MAME games or Emulator games (Project 64, specifically) with them.

Is there any kind of adapter/patch I could buy or download that would enable these games to use my controller(s)?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have used my USB game controller with Project 64, no problem. You do have to set up the controller under input devices though. Did you try that? If I remember correctly, it took pushing the buttons a couople of times before the they would register.
