Any (D)HTML Wizards Know of a Good Custom Select Box?

I'm building a form for this project I'm working on, and the lack of stylesheet customization on the select/option drop-downs really looks out of place and is starting to piss me off. I've resigned myself to just writing a DHTML select-box of my own so I'm not constrained by one of the numerous stupidities of HTML forms.

This is a widely known annoyance, so I figured someone would have written this already, but I haven't had much luck finding one.

I found this thing -- http://www.insidedhtml.com/tips/webfx/ts09/page1.asp -- but the code is pretty buggy, and I'd just end up re-writing it anyway.

Is anyone familiar with a decent component for this? I don't need to do anything grand other than simply changing the border and padding and probably the depth-shadowing on the scrollbar, but for reasons that make little sense, there's no built-in functionality to control that stuff that I'm aware of.

Thanks for any help.
