need some advice on buying a computer

i'm in need of a new computer and hoping someone can help me out. First it will be used mostly for the internet, music, and video games. I would like to know what brand, mininum speed, minum memory, vidoe card, sound card, cd r/w, dvd-r or not stuff like that. any recomedations? also would I be better off getting the cheap moniter and buying a lcd flat screen seperate? Don't want a MAC. And will have about $1500 to spend. I was thinking of getting a Dell anything bad about them?

Thanks for any help

Just got a Dell (2.4 P4, 60 GB HD, 17" LCD) for less than $1K with rebate. Not much less...it was $991. Got it 2 weeks ago, and I'm lovin' it.

Why not build one yourself?

I would get :
Athlon XP2500 - 192$
512 Megs DDR333 ram - 90$ (2x256)
Motherboard (Dual DDR ) - 100-150$
Radeon 9500 video - 190$
80GB HD - 100$
17 monitor (not LCD) - 130$
52x cdrom - 30$
DVDR - 300$

Total with taxes and the rest (case, fans, keyboard, mouse and sound) should come to around 1500$.

Irregardless of what you get though, I would go with AMD's new chips with a dual DDR motherboard and it will really improve general performance compared to buying a Dell.
