how to tell what motherboard I have?

I must seem like an idiot to some of you but I need to know what motherboard I have so I can get a few upgrades. The only think I can make out is that the processor is sitting in a socket 7. I don't mind unhooking cables(its a mess in there) to look. Is there a way to indentify
the type of board by markings on it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you have a brand PC, then it might be hard to tell since it will mostly be OEM. You should be able to find what CPU, maximum memory, PCI slots, etc. from the brand PC's website. Most motherboards will have the brand and model imprinted on the board. From there, you can goto the motherboard's website to find the manual.

It is not always a simple task, but this page makes is a little less difficult

http://www.wimsbios.com/

you need to go into the BIOS and find two things

1. BIOS ID (this also appears on the screen at boot)
2. brand of BIOS on your board

These should not be hard to figure, once you have this information, go to the link above and do some research based on the number. You first have to click into AMI BIOS or Award BIOS, then you can figure everything else out.
