Is this possible? PC problem

A couple weeks ago my computer would not boot. I checked the MOBO, etc and nothing. I decided it was time to upgrade the motherboard /cpu anyway. Well, after installing the new components I cannot get any of the hradware(cdrom, cdrw, old HD, even the floppy) to work on the new mobo. I had a new 40 Gb drive and I tried that and it worked. I then tried an old cd drive. Again seem register in bios.

Is it possible some sort of surge destoyed all my components?

If so, what can I do to get windows on this machine. Also is there any way to get the data off the old HD. I just can believe that every piece if destoyed. I am no wizard but I have built a few computers. Am I missing something.

My gear is 8RDA+, XP2100,256 DDR 2100

Check your IDE cables form the mobo to the drive. Re-register everything to the BIOS and see what hapens. Also, you might want to check your jumpers.
