Password Security

My parents were telling me the other night how they were watching this news report about pw security and said the report said something like how it was more secure to mix #s and letters for your pws. The report said something like a six letter word pw like "jersey" could be broken in 30 seconds, and a pw all #s ex. "454311", would only take a few hours to crack depending on its length.

But it said that "jersey", if you replace the first e with a 7 and the second e with a 3, "j7rs3y" it'd take 365 days to crack. Perhaps this explains M$'s CD keys. I don't have a link nor seen the report, just repeating what they told me. Do you guys think this report is accurate?

Yes. You can't do a "dictionary" crack if the password is junk. You have to try all possible combinations and that is tried after the dictionary crack.

If you have physical access to a windows machine with a floppy drive, you can crack any password in just a few minutes

The best passwords include all kinds of crap

Yup. That's why I like to lock down the BIOS, take the floppy out of the boot cycle and put locks on the cases. If someone wants to break the system bad enough, they'll still do it... my hope is to just make it harder than the next guy's system so they'll move on to his.
