going to buy a dell, please help....

my current computer is on its way out the door so i got on dell's site to see what they had going. since i didnt buy/pick my last one, i dont know what i should be getting. below are my picks so far if you would be so kind as to provide advice???

dimension 2350 beginning price of 599 (including 100 rebate)
intel pentium proc. 4 at 2.4Ghz (could i get away with a 2.0?)
128mb ddr-sdram (or do i need to go ahead and get the 256?)
60Gb hard drive
16x max dvd-rom
40x/10x/40x cd-rw (free second bay)
15in flat panel montor (i'm torn, it's going on a small desk so the space would be great but i dont know if it's a good deal???)
56K data/fax modem

ending price $979 (before $100 rebate)

i use it for school, writing, "downloads", and minor graphics (art history major). any suggestions before i get it (any coupons???)

thanks in advance!

You better get more memory! Why not get a combo drive?Might want to upgrade to DVD-RW drives some time later, and what OS are you getting?

I was in the same boat as you a month ago, and after owning a Gateway system for 4 years I realize that I'd been held back by their use of proprietary hardware. I'm positive Dell uses them too, and I vowed to never buy from a company that does.

With that said, I bought a new PC from a builder called PC Club. I got an AMD XP2000+, 256 pc2100 ddr ram, 16x DVD rom,
48-12-48x CD-R, a 40G HD, and a 64mb G4 MX-440. All that came up to $808, not including a monitor. I used think Intel made the best processors available, but after researching the performance differences between Athlons and the Pentium IV I quickly discovered that despite the lower retail price, the Athlon outperformed the Pentium IV in virtually every benchmark test.

I am extremely happy with the service I received from PC Club, and the fact that hey have numerous shops in my area makes it very convenient if I should ever have to bring it in for service.
Just make sure you buy from a shop that will warranty their products and labor for at least a year.

I would go check the Dell deal's over at FW. They've got a Dell thread with posts about maximizing your Dell computer purchase. They're regularly mentioning Dell P4's for about $400. Then you can still get your LCD

I just ordered the 4550 w/ DVD writer, and 15" flat panel monitor for $1160 shipped. Spend a little extra and get what you want.

You know, funny story, I almost bought a Dell too! Then I got an unbelievable deal from Best Buy while asking them to give me a spec sheet on a pc that dell was going to price match-- But anyways-- Dell does do price matching for PC'S with similiar specs- so get the specs on some no name from circuit city or whereever-- and tell Dell -- and they should price match you-- -- any rep should do- good luck--
