Are you an RTS gamer?

If so, would does RTS stand for?

Real-Time Strategy. These are games like Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Warcraft, Starcraft, etc. - basically, any wargame conducted in real-time.

I don't find these games particularly exciting. The learning curve is ridiculously steep; in the end, it boils down to real-time accounting. And with a new game hitting the market every two weeks, it's impossible to keep up with a new set of rules.

Thanks for the responses.

What are some good games in both (RTS and TBS) categories that I can get as gifts for my brother? Hopefully they won't be "out-of-season" before Christmas. Thanks.

Warcraft 3 won't be out of season for a while. Red Alert 2 has been out a couple of years but it's still going strong. The advantage is that you will find it at a discount almost anywhere.

Age of Mythology was just released. As RTS games go, this series is one of the best.

Warcraft III is another good one.

The Civilization series is a very good Turn-Based Strategy game, with the 3rd version being the current.

Another good one is Heroes of Might and Magic. I believe they're up to number 4 now.

Is there a web site you can point me to that provides decent reviews and current bestseller rankings?

As a looo-oooo-ooo-ng time gamer, both RTS and TBS, I'd like to make the following suggestions.

For RTS, but the Starcraft w/Brood Wars expansion pak. This is RTS at it's best. As an alternative you can buy your brother either Age of Empires II w/the Crusaders expansion pack or the upcoming Age of Mythology. It depends on whether your brother would prefer game themes for space, medieval, or greek mythology. You cant go wrong with anyone of these.

For TBS I recommend Heroes of Might and Magic, the Platinum edition (which is a collection of HMM, HMM2 and HMM3 with all the expansion packs). I bought HMM4, but was sorely disappointed with the game (the graphics were awesome, but the game came without the random map generator, which eliminates the replayability factor). HMM3 is actually my favorite game of all time, and I've played most everything that's out there (at least the popular ones). Another TBS option is Civilization III. This is the update to Civ II, another game I played for years because of the random map generator. Civ III comes with enhanced graphics, gameplay, and a random map generator that will continue to feed the addiction for years.

Good luck on your search, let us know what you decide!
