I wouldn't worry since you have cable, right?

Hmm, not sure about DSL, but I'd only be worried if you plugged in a line to your 56k modem and I doubt you'd do that.

i don't think they actually dial in; don't they just try to find a connection to whatever it is they have to?

I think they would automatically dial a # to get connected to the website. But how can dial up make a new connection when its already connected?

Think about it. Doesn't it have to dial a phone number to get the call to the phone number charged to your phone bill? That's their mechanism for getting you charged for the call. Not too easy to do that through a DSL or cable modem.

But if you have your dialup modem connected to the phone line... You certainly can dialup even though you have another method of connection to the internet.

you might also make sure you uninstall it from the add/remove programs menu and also remove the icon from your start menu. they notoriously appear there as well. i know this from all the "accidental" times i've installed it

Yes, they can automatically download, install and dial themselves. They will disconnect your current connection and dial a new one. Happened right in front of my eyes once. Freaked me out.

While doing the quarterly 'tune-up' of my in-laws machine, I found one of those on it. Apparently she downloaded one of those stupid 'Free Game' or 'Desktop Character' things, and it had one of those dialing scams on it. AdAware found so much stuff....Luckily they are on cable, so it never dialed. She also never doubleclicked it, but once I explained what it was, and how those SOB's make their money, they were both in shock. Needless to say, they like for me to take a look at their machine whenever I go over there.
