Argh! ATT Cable modem down in Chicago.

What the fruck is going on with ATT? They were doing so well after the @home fiasco and raising the upload speed and everything; and now my connection isn't working. That little modem send light just sits there, silently mocking me; i'm convinced it sees the grief within me at not being able to check my email or open up 18 threads at once. What the hell do I do? This dialup is slow torture.....

Hi huzefa,

(I'm also in Chicago)

I'm pretty sure it's just a one-time thing.

This morning at 5:45 AM I was surfing along happily and all of a sudden everything just stopped and I couldn't do anything Internet related (web, POP3, etc.). About a minute later the modem lights started flashing in a strange sequence I'd never seen before (they were putting on a little light show, lol). So I broke out the manual for my modem and it says that particular sequence is for "Software downloading or update in progress."

So anyway, I guess it was just some routine service on their part.

I think the service has been AWESOME since ATT took over. Back when it was still @Home my service used to go out ALL THE TIME (like once a week). In all the time ATT has been running things, I think service has only been down one time (other than today). So I'm sure you'll be back up soon. The whole "Software updating" only lasted about 15 minutes for me, and then I was back on.

Good luck!

Are you on dhcp or static ip. Try restarting the modem. Once in a while it's one of those things where the software needs to be restarted.

Already restarted, and powercycled the modem many times. It's weird that the send light is on but the receive is blinking. I'm using a router, but I doubt that makes any difference to the modem.

Edit: I'm on dhcp

You have a manual?! Where's my manual? Mine is just an empty box. But I'll live through it, I guess. The tech guy is coming tomorrow morning so I can stomach another night of dialup (I hope). But WRT to @Home's, I loved it. I was getting 5MBps down. Then ATT comes in and cuts the speed by 2/3.

Are u kidding? You can't understand what it's like to go back to dialup once you've had a fast connection! I'm just spoiled! Less than 11 hours to go and it seems as if time is moving backward..... this weird world I'm in doesn't seem to care or even know. In the meanwhile though, I've discovered the joys of cooking and that I actually have a lot of junk on my desk.

I'm baaaaccckkk! Turns out the utility pole next to my house is falling over a bit and that screwed up the connection. My next call is to the mayor himself (of Skokie, that is).
