In the menu, go to Image>Mode and then change it from "indexed color" to "rgb color".

I just open up the GIF in Paint Shop Pro and save it as a JPEG. Then, if you open it as a JPEG, you've got all the colors etc. Sometimes that doesn't work, so I have to get the original dimensions of the image, create a new blank image with those dimensions and then copy the GIF and paste it into the new image. Or just use Irfanview

Photshop is the easiest solution. Everyone should have photoshop. Its a necessity.

well, not everyone wants to shell out the cash for it. of course, there are illegal ways to obtain it, but those are illegal

the method suggested by belbozk worked for me...but i am still not able to convert it to a jpg in photoshop. not that big a deal i guess.

on another photoshop note...is there an easy way to make a circle (like a doughnut with a hollow center) to place over an object? i have tried drawing one freehand but it has not been pretty!
