Free SMTP server?

I'm being forced to use AOL since it's free (trial) and they don't have a SMTP server. I have an account from the U of Oregon and their SMTP server doesn't allow relaying so I have to either use the web mail or login via SSH and send mail with Pine. Both of those methods are slow and bothersome to me.

So, does anyone know of a SMTP server that would allow me to send mail using Outlook Express? I also have WinXP Pro and would it be possible for me to set up my own SMTP server and use that to send mail? I've tried doing that before but I couldn't get it to work.

http://www.softhome.net

Word for the wise, though: The servers do not respond about 10% of the time, it has been my experience.

I'm agree with filmerp. I used softhome for months now, and there's little to complain. Some of my friends are using http://www.hotpop.com too. And they're quite satisfied.

How about run your own SMTP server if your ISP does not block port 25? Linux has sendmail, for Windows platform you can get free postcast server at: http://www.postcastserver.com/html/download.html

Thanks lxl. I'll check that one out also. I don't know if AOHell blocks port 25. I'd imagine they would since they're a POS "ISP"

I took a look at those other sites briefly and I have a question about them. Is it possible to use their SMTP server with another e-mail address. I want to be able to send mail out with [email protected] and not [email protected], etc.
